A One-Man Army

·
           Who Is Sharmila-
·         Irom Sharmila Chanu (born 14 March 1972), also known as the "Iron Lady of Manipur" or "Mengoubi" ("the fair one") is a civil rights activist, political activist, and poet from the Indian state of Manipur.
·         What is she doing?
·         On 2 November 2000, she began a hunger strike which is still ongoing. Sharmila, was 28 at the time, began to fast in protest of the killing, taking neither food nor water..
·          Having refused food and water for more than 500 weeks (almost 13years), she has been called "the world's longest hunger striker".
·         Why is she doing?
·         On 2 November 2000, in Malom, a town in the Imphal Valley of Manipur, ten civilians were shot and killed while waiting at a bus stop. The incident, known as the "Malom Massacre",was allegedly committed by the Assam Rifles (AFSPA), one of the Indian Paramilitary forces operating in the state. The victims included Leisangbam Ibetombi, a 62-year old woman, and 18-year old Sinam Chandramani, a 1988 National Child Bravery Award winner.
·         The Act she is up against-
·         The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), is an Act of the Parliament of India which was passed on 11 September 1958. It is a law with just six sections granting special powers to the armed forces in what the act terms as "disturbed areas". The Act has received criticism from several sections for alleged concerns about human rights violations in the regions of its enforcement, where arbitrary killings, torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and enforced disappearances have alleged to have happened.
·         If you wanted to know further-In 1951, the Naga National Council(NNC) reported that it conducted a ‘free and fair plebiscite’ in which about 99 per cent Nagas voted for a ‘Free Sovereign Naga Nation’. There was a boycott of first general election of 1952 which later, extended to boycott of government schools and officials. In order to deal with the situation, the Assam government imposed the Assam Maintenance of Public Order (Autonomous District) Act in the Naga Hills in 1953 and intensified police action against the rebels. When the situation worsened, Assam deployed the Assam Rifles in the Naga Hills and enacted the Assam Disturbed Areas Act of 1955, providing a legal framework for the paramilitary forces and the armed state police to combat insurgency in the region. But the Assam Rifles and the state armed police could not contain the Naga rebellion and the rebel Naga Nationalist Council(NNC) formed a parallel government "The Federal Government of Nagaland" on 22 March 1956. The Armed Forces (Assam and Manipur) Special Powers Ordinance 1958 was promulgated by the President Dr. Rajendra Prasad on 22 May 1958. It was replaced by Armed Forces (Assam and Manipur) special Powers Act, 1958 on 11 September 1958.
·         The Recognition- On International Women’s Day, 2014 she was voted the top woman icon of India by MSN Poll.
·         Sharmila was awarded the 2007 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights, which is given to “an outstanding person or group, active in the promotion and advocacy of Peace, Democracy and Human RightsIn 2009, she was awarded the first Mayillama Award of the Mayilamma Foundation “for achievement of her nonviolent struggle in Manipur”.
·         In 2010, she won a lifetime achievement award from the Asian Human Rights Commission. Later that year, she won the Rabindranath Tagore Peace Prize of the Indian Institute of Planning and Management, which came with a cash award of 5,100,000 rupees, and the Sarva Gunah Sampannah “Award for Peace and Harmony” from the Signature Training Centre.
·         Where we are- A nation driven by politicians, film stars and cricketers has refused to offer the centre stage to a commoner like her. I don’t know whether I support her movement or not, all I know is that I CANNOT BE LIKE HER, deciding to go without water for more than a decade…Still a question haunts me: DO I WANT TO BE LIKE HER? DO WE?-Arijit Ghosh

No criminal Netas any more?

The Narendra Modi government is ready with some tough proposals to decriminalize politics by amending the Representation of People Act to debar those against whom charges are framed in a heinous crime from contesting elections for a minimum of 13 years.

The proposed changes, part of the draft RP Act (amendment) bill, says a candidate can be disqualified from contesting elections if a chargesheet has been filed against him in a court for any crime where the prison term is not less than seven years. He shall remain disqualified from contesting polls till his acquittal or six years after serving the prison term.
$ 1,00,0000 question-Things look rosy for now. We'll have to wait. But then the bill also says you can be a Neta even if you have been a convicted for a prison term of up to 7 years. Netas often do not get involved directly. They incite crimes. In that case the prison term won't be more than 7 years and he won't lose his post.

After Lalu- Nitish alliance won, I feel completely clueless. I cannot read the psyche of our voters. What are they after? Why has Modi magic waned so quickly? what are people expectations? are they helpless? why is the result of by- election( after a decisive mandate @ loksabha) Why don't they heitate to vote for a convict who stole their money?Media earlier reported that there were only a few hundred people at the rally of the said two. When shall we wake up from the nightmare of caste politics and vote for a better India? Shall we ever?

Good -Bad- Ugly

Good -Bad- Ugly
Good thing that Modi govt.has done in the first few days after coming to power is that they have put TOILETS BEFORE TEMPLES.
Again, attempts to free bureaucrats from the clutch of politicians must be appreciated.Finally. trying to befriend our neighboring countries must be appreciated.

Bad thing- We have come to know that He believes in MADE IN INDIA brand. It is gonna take time-pretty long time,I guess. We have NOT seen anything directional. Indians do not want lip-service.

Ugly thing-Other Ministers have been dwarfed altogether. It was always a risk: when you vote a PERSON and not a party, you're always inviting autocracy.

Excerpts from Modi's I-Day speech:
1.I can promise you. If you work 12 hours, I will work for 13. If you work 14 hours, I will work for 15 hours. Why? Because I am not a pradhan mantri, but a pradhan sevak.
2. I come from a poor family and I want the poor to get dignity. We want to start a movement for a clean India. If we have to build a nation, let us start from the villages.
3. Can someone tell me, whatever we are doing, have we asked ourselves if our work has helped the poor or come to benefit the nation in any way? We should come out of the 'Why should I care' attitude and dedicate ourselves to the nation's progress.
4. From ramparts of the Red Fort, I would like to call people of the world to 'come, make in India'. I want to tell the global companies that we have skill, talent and discipline... From electronics to electricals, from chemicals to pharmaceuticals, come, make in India. Paper to plastic, automobiles to agricultural products, come, make in India, from satellite to submarine, come, make in India. We have the capabilities. Come here and manufacture in India. Sell the products anywhere in the world but manufacture here... we have the power, come I am inviting you.
5. The mantra of our country's youth should be to at least make 1 product that we import. Don't compromise in manufacturing; Stress on Zero defect, Zero effect (impact of environment). Our manufacturing should have zero defects so that our products should not be rejected in the global market. Besides, we should also keep in mind that manufacturing should not have any negative impact on our environment.

GOOD AND BAD

Among many fields of activity India's strength in basic research is recognized internationally. Successes in agriculture, health care, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, nuclear energy, astronomy and astrophysics, space technology and applications, defense research, biotechnology, electronics, information technology and oceanography are widely acknowledged.
BUT
Among the Asian countries, India accounts for about 10% of the total expenditure on Research and Development (R&D).In the past five years the numbers of scientific publications in the country have grown by 45%. But compared to other developed countries, India is still way behind. India has only 140 researchers per 1,000,000 population while the figure is 4,651 in the US.
